Things to keep handy

PLEASE UNDERSTAND I am not a veterinarian and home remedies should not negate consulting a veterinarian and getting pets properly diagnosed and treated. Especially if any symptoms do not improve or worsen, or there is an emergency.

gram scale - for checking weights

Syringes - preferably 1cc syringes, for giving medication

nail clippers - nail trims

container for medicine - most need to be kept in airtight containers

q tips - for cleaning

colliodal silver - antibiotic / antiviral properties

Echinacea drops - f0r mild sniffles (2 drops on your treat choice Twice a day)

Dark chocolate (must be 70% or higher) - contains theobromine and theophylline which stimulates lungs/air passages and help things remain open. (useful for asthmatic rats / rats in varying stages of respiratory distress)

coconut oil - dry skin, suffocating parasites, healthy fat to perk up sick animals

jarred baby food - used for animals that are exhibiting lack of appetite

manuka honey - natural antiseptic that has great healing properties (okay to use on open wound unless the wound needs to be left open to drain)

Saline - sterilize / flush open wounds

chlorhexadine - animal safe antiseptic wash

pedialyte/electrolytes - to boost a dehydrated animal

Betadine - animal safe antiseptic wash

Benadryl - allergic reactions

infant Ibuprofin - pain and INFLAMMATION management

doxycyline - antibiotic used for bacterial infections (respiratory infections & Mycoplasma Pulmosis) works best when used with amoxycilin or baytril

Enrofloxacin (Baytril) - antibiotic used for bacterial infections (respiratory & mycoplasma Pulmosis) has a short self life, do not keep in fridge

amoxicillin - antibiotic used for bacterial infections (respiratory & mycoplasma pulmosis) works best when used with doxycyline

revolution - anti-parasitic SOLUTION that works on lice and mites


Dosing

Amoxicillin

  • prepare 5ml water per 250mg of amoxicillian (use syringe for this)

  • weigh the rat in grams (using your kitchen scale)

  • open up the amoxicillin tablet and add it to the water. stir until completely dissolved. mixture will be milky white and may have a faint unpleasant odour.

  • treat twice a day for twO weeks

  • unused mixture can be stored in airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Doxycyline

  • prepare 5ml water per 100mg of doxycyline (use Syringe for this)

  • weigh the rat in grams (using your kitchen scale)

  • open the doxycyline tablet and add it to the water. stir until completely dissolved. mixture will be yellow.

  • treat twice a day for two weeks

  • unused mixture can be stored in the airtight container in the fridge for up to three weeks.

Enroflaxcin

  • prepare 4ml of water / flavoured liquid in a small bowl (use syringe for this)

  • weigh the rat in grams (using your kitchen scale)

  • measure 1ml of enroflaxcin 10% and mix with the water/liquid.

  • use high value treat (do not give on its own)

  • treat twice a day while symptoms persist, for three Weeks up to six weeks (if NECESSARY.)

Revolution

  • weigh rat (using your kitchen scale)

  • measure dosage with 1cc syringe

  • flip coat up to expose skin, apply the dosage in between the shoulder blades. allow it to set for approximately 10 minutes before placing the rat back into the cage

  • must treat all rats / small animals if kept in the same household

  • repeat every two weeks until parasites are no longer visible on any rats
